Tina's Whole Wheat Bread Recipe

In case you wondered about my recipe, like my friend Pony, here's the recipe I used yesterday to make my bread...

Place these ingredients in the bread machine:

1 cup and 2 tablespoons fat-free milk
3 cups whole wheat flour
3 tablespoons vital wheat gluten (found in the baking aisle at the grocery store, near the special flours)
1/3 cup honey
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 tablespoons butter, unsalted
1 1/2 teaspoons bread machine yeast

Set bread machine to dough cycle and turn it on.

When it's finished, knead dough, divide it into two pieces and shape them into loaves.

Freeze one for another time. (This meant my loaf was only a half of a loaf because that's all I wanted to bake.)

Put the other loaf in a bread pan sprayed with non-stick spray.

Cover with plastic wrap and let rise about an hour.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Brush with melted butter.

Note: The ingredients shouldn't be cold. I heated my milk up in the microwave until it was lukewarm, which worked for me.

Happy National Pie Day! Really!

Today is a rest day from running, and I had planned to write about pie crust (that is my recipe project this month) and how I've moved on to looking for healthy recipes to perfect, but that will have to wait because there's a new Garmin in town and it looks pretty good. Have you heard about it? It's the Forerunner 405.

It's touch-sensitive, looks more like a watch than the Forerunner 205, and you can track your heart-rate with it. If you want one, you'll need to save up your Christmas gift money and your birthday gift money and if you have anything else special coming up, just ask for money because it's kind of pricey.

The Forerunner comes in black or sage green (I'm voting for the green) and is not really in town yet, but it's expected in stores in late February. That's just in time for I Want You to be Happy Day on March 3rd. (No, I did not make that holiday up.)

My First Television Appearance

I had one of those morning runs where the sun is peeking through the clouds, and even though there are a few gray clouds, you're happy to be running down the road. It didn't look like it was going to rain when I left home, but I wore my cap just in case and I'm glad I did because it ended up pouring. I "squish-squashed" down the road for five miles with an average pace of 10:03/mile. This was another recovery run.

Have you heard about the runner/black belt holder who chased down the thief? No, this is not the beginning of a joke. She found him stealing things in her house and she wasn't going to let him get away with that; because she knew how to defend herself and her belongings, he didn't.

In 2006, I took a self-defense class with DD just before she went off to college. There was a local television reporter who took the class with us and at the end of the class they interviewed some of us who had just taken a "self-defense test" to see if we'…

My Second Television Debut

So this is what it's like to be famous. I've had people come up to me and tell me they saw me on TV this week...well, two of my friends have told me that anyway!

Just after crossing the finish line at the marathon, looking bad enough to warrant one of the medical volunteers to tell me, "Look at me and smile so I know you're okay", I had a microphone in front of me and was interviewed by the local tv channel who was broadcasting from the marathon location.

I didn't write about it on my blog and I hoped that I looked so bad that no one would recognize me. (Wait, I don't think that came out the way I meant it!) But a couple of people have mentioned the show and you know what that means. : (!

Only about two minutes before the interview, I was trudging down the street towards the finish line thinking, "I know I didn't make my goal of 3:50."

Marathon Cheerleaders

I watched a video of the marathon finish and remembered how nice it was that the announcer and the crowds were really excited about the group of us coming in with a sub-four hour time.

Speaking of the crowds, they were great. Over and over again, hearing my name called out and being told, "You can do it!" encouraged me to keep running when I was dragging. My favorite line was, "You trained for this!" To all of those cheerleaders out there, "Thank you very much!"

I hopped on the treadmill again this morning and did another five miles. It was so much easier to run today than it was yesterday, but I'm still taking it easy.

Mile 1- 12:00/mile
Miles 2 to 4- 10:00/mile
Mile 5- 11:00/mile

Houston Marathon '08 Race Recap

I finished the Houston Marathon in 3:54:03 - my third marathon! When it was over, I was so glad to not be running anymore! It was so hard and the training was pretty hard, too! Maybe I'll try running a marathon again or maybe not. I'll think about it a few days, but mostly, I want to.

Maybe I would have made my goal of 3:50:59 (a BQ) if my Garmin had been working. I was running along at a good pace, but my Garmin got stuck on something like 8:25/mile pace and I thought I was running along just fine and at a pace that would help me meet my goal, but I wasn't.

A friend from my running group who was running the marathon, too, came along and tried to help me finish in my goal time, but I thought she must have been going a little too fast for me and that I didn't have to run as fast as she was going. (Remember, my Garmin was stuck at a good pace.)

We ran together around mile 17 and I didn't think to ask the pace - I didn't know anything was wrong with my watch. …

Marathon Expo

I ran four easy miles this morning with a pace of 10:00/mile. It was a chilly 43 degrees. I didn't want to run too hard because the marathon is Sunday.

We went to the marathon expo this afternoon and I listened to a talk on race recovery and one of the tips I learned from the speaker, Roberta Anding, was to eat within 15 minutes of finishing. I think I've heard to eat within 30 or 45 minutes, but not 15. So I'll try to refuel soon after I finish running from now on. I don't know about you, but sometimes that's hard to do. There are a lot of things I need to do when I finish running and eating is something that is easy to put off.

I came home with a bag of stuff: an ice pack, food, lotion, a bandana with a map on it, water bottles.

I tried a new Luna bar - Pistachio. I was surprised that it was greenish. Cinnamon is still my favorite.

I tried a new Clif bar - Blueberry. In the past, I tried Clif bar and didn't like them, but Blueberry was good and fruity.
