Beep, Beep!

Tough 18 mile run! I had to walk or rest on benches too many times today even though it was windy and cloudy. Houston Memorial Park advantages: water fountains, benches, some shade. Disadvantage: during long runs, the benches are tempting!
The first ten or so miles were okay, but at the 12 mile mark, the sun peeked out from behind the clouds and I thought, I am cooked! The end! I cannot run 6 miles in the sun! 

Then the clouds came back, but I was tired and sometimes there wasn't any wind and the air just sat there, kind of smothering you. (A little dramatic, but that's summer heat!) This is where the park benches came in handy. That's where I gave myself some pep talks. The first talk was such a good one that I took off too fast and had to sit on a bench again too soon after the first rest!

8 Mile Run

Since I don't want you to think that all I've been doing is sitting around, eating peanut butter cookies, ; ) I had better post that I ran 8 easy miles today, drinking Nuun at mile 4 and feeling better than usual in the heat. Carrying partially frozen water gave me something to look forward to every two miles. Stay cool!

Peanut Butter Cookies

The Last Batch I Made - Gone Now!
In one of my cookbooks, the page with my favorite peanut butter cookie recipe has a sticky note on it that's dated 9/1/04. That was the first time my daughter baked those cookies. I wanted her to learn to cook and cookies seemed like a great start. Last night, I received a peanut butter cookie request so it's time to bake another batch and I don't mind a bit!

I ran 12 miles with 6 short sprints today, squirting my extra water down my neck in the last and hottest mile. Brrr - it felt good! When I finished, the temperature was 82, but it felt like 101. Really!

Peanut Butter Cookies

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup peanut butter (I use natural peanut butter)

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 egg

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

3/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1.Mix first 5 ingredients in a large bowl. Stir in remaining ingredients.

Long Run w/Trails

My summer running tip: carry more water than you think you'll need. I drank two extra cups of water today.
After running four miles with Zoe, my dog, I ran home to let her take a nap and picked up my frozen Gatorade and then I was off to the park again. I took a different path this time and ran over to the bridge where I did some hillwork, mixed with some flat running for relief. That made miles seven and eight fly by for some crazy reason of which I can't explain!
I ran a flat 3 mile loop, stopped in the air-conditioned restroom (AC is wonderful!) just to pour my Gatorade powder into one of my empty bottles and filled two bottles with cold water from the fountain.
Next, it was time to try something I've been wanting to do for a long time - run on the mountain bike trails. Once I was on them, all I could hear was the sound of the cicadas. Run & Ride

I ran ten miles this morning. Drinking very cold Gatorade nearly every two miles cooled me off. I froze it in my bottles last night. Two miles from home I was able to speed up - happiness! A half a mile from home I slowed down for a cool-down and I still felt fine. So...

I changed into my bike clothes and my husband and I went mountain bike riding (80 minutes). I sailed up and down the Memorial Park hills and had to walk a few, too. Here I am after chickening out at the top of a steep hill. I couldn't help but wonder how much running I'd miss if I fell and broke a leg! ; )

Inside/Outside Run

Treats for Zoe, My Dog I felt a little sick after Wednesday and Thursday's hot runs. Today was different - 11 mile run and I never felt sick.

First, my dog and I went for a 4 mile run. At the two mile mark, I leaned on the water fountain to rest. Being tired at two miles is not good! I slowly ran back home and did something different...

I hopped on the treadmill. With the fan blowing on me, running wasn't easy, but it was easier. I watched the squirrels out the window and felt sorry for all of the runners I saw huffing and puffing down the street.

I drank Gatorade every mile or two - the goal had been every two miles, but with my drink nearby I talked myself into the wisdom of taking in less Gatorade more often. Every time I got a drink I had to stop, though - today's bottle was too big for my treadmill drink holder. Sometimes stopping is nice - as long as you can keep going after the rest.

I was able to run the last five miles a little faster than the first six today only…

Skim Milk & Vit D

Because there were a couple of comments from readers who had never heard about the fat needed in milk in order to get the vitamin D benefit, I started wondering if I might be wrong.

Here's the brief mention of needing fat in your milk which was the reason for what I posted this morning. And here's the article I just came across which states that vitamin D is absorbed just as well from skim milk as it is from whole milk based on this study.

I'm sorry for the confusion. I don't know what the truth is, but I hope after looking at both sides, you'll enjoy your glass of milk, skim or with a little fat in it.

Low on Vitamin D

My blood test results are in: I'm low on vitamin D - I'll start taking 2000 IU of vitamin D daily. Because my vitamin D number was 33 and my doctor wants to see it at 70, she'd like me to take more vit D. It wasn't enough to get lots of sunshine, drink low-fat chocolate milk (not fat-free like I used to drink because vitamin D needs fat to break it down. Update: I may be wrong about the fat!) and take a multivitamin with 800 IU of vitamin D - maybe partly because we sweat out our nutrients and cover up with sunscreen.

The best part is that since a lack of vitamin D can slow you down, increasing vitamin D made one runner faster! I'm ready for faster! It could even make me happier since being low on D can cause depression. Sounds like a pretty special vitamin!

I ate quinoa (sounds like KEEN-wha) nearly plain a couple of years ago and didn't like it. Then I ate a delicious quinoa vegetable salad at our recent family reunion and I liked it. Quinoa is healthy, gluten-free, versatile and cooks faster than brown rice.
For breakfast, you can mix together cooked and cold (or warm, if you like) quinoa, flax seeds, almonds, lots of strawberries, cinnamon, and milk.

For lunch, I've made a cold Quinoa Vegetable Salad. Of course, you really don't have to be specific about the other added in ingredients. Like making a salad, you just keep adding until it looks good. Here's what I added to the cooked quinoa shown in the photo: tomatoes, cucumbers, corn, carrots, salt, pepper, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, cilantro and mint. I also like adding in garbanzo beans.
I found it in the grocery store bulk bins and I store it (uncooked or cooked) in the refrigerator. If you have any favorite quinoa recipes, let me know!

Blueberry Syrup & Garminless Run

French toast (wheat bread dipped in egg) topped with blueberry syrup - that was my post-run breakfast yesterday. Heat up 1/2 a cup of blueberries in a pan. Stir together 1/2 teaspoon corn starch and 1/2 tablespoon water. Add this mixture to the blueberries. Stir in a little extra water, if needed. Visit Lori's blog for step-by-step photos.

This morning when I picked up my Garmin just before my run, I saw that I hadn't charged it correctly and the battery was dead. Can I run without my Garmin? How would I know when to eat or drink?! I grabbed a pencil and paper and figured out my 12 mile running route: run to the park, run 4 loops, and run home. I didn't give it another thought.

I kept the pace easy. I ate a Gu after running about 6 miles. I drank when I was thirsty. Somewhere around my ninth mile, I was surprised at how I was able to run by benches and not wish I would stop and sit on each one. Progress! Towards the end, there was a nice wind. It was a good run.

Check-up vs. 10 Mile Run

Cooler today - only 73 degrees and cloudy! I ran 6 miles, ran back home for some cold Gatorade, and then ran another 4 miles with my dog.

That was the best part of my run. We've gotten a lot better at running together. We don't step on each other's toes or paws anymore! Plus, people are more likely to smile when you're running with a dog. : )

Yesterday I made myself go in for my annual physical exam. I dreaded going, always do. I had to fast until my blood was taken (must they take so very much?), but when it was finally all over at 11:30, I speed-walked to my car where I had a smoothie waiting. If I could choose between running 10 miles or going in for a check-up, I'd choose the run, even on a hot day!

Happy National Running Day! I had a good long run at Memorial Park where lots of runners celebrated the holiday by getting in a good sweat. Thanks, Luke's Locker, for offering orange Gatorade on the running loop!
I usually get a drink every two miles, but today I drank every 2.5 miles (Gu w/water or Gatorade or water). Sometimes on long, hot runs, my hands get puffy and that may be from over-drinking, but no puffiness today.
I listened to music, but I can't do that for too long on hot runs - my ears fill up with sweat, making it hard to hear for a few hours after I run. When I grew bored, I did a little back and forth running (left to right and back again on the path) in a quiet section just for something different - hope it didn't look like the heat was getting to me!
