Roctane GU & 9 Miles

Carried On My Run
I ran 2 warm up miles and then I ran 5 marathon paced* miles. I wanted to remind myself of what that pace felt like. Running MP* miles took some concentration, checking my Garmin to stay on pace and looking at the path ahead. My goal was 8:47-9:10/mile pace. My mile splits: 8:46, 8:54, 8:36, 8:44, 8:32/mile.

About midway through, I got the low battery alert on my Garmin. When I saw the alert, I stopped to fiddle with my Garmin, made a quick turn towards home, changed my mind because I wasn't going to stop and recharge the battery and made another u-turn towards the water fountain. From there I knew I was 2 miles from home - I wanted a marker in case my Garmin died.

I decided that I'd try to run fast for the full 5 miles even if I didn't know my pace, but my Garmin never stopped working even though I ran 9 miles - about 4.5 miles after I got the first alert.

I drank Cytomax at the 2 mile mark and ate a Vanilla Orange Roctane GU gel at mile 4.5, both of which I thought I might use during the marathon. Maybe it was because I'd just had some sweet Cytomax, but vanilla orange was mostly flavorless. I felt strong to the end, though.

I've bought Roctane for $2.20-2.50 locally and regular GU gels for $1. Since I follow GU on Twitter, I heard about a gel deal. If you make any purchase at GU Energy like I did and use coupon code INROC2K10, you'll receive 6 free Roctane gels in the new flavor, Island Nectar.

For $12.09, UPS will be delivering 6 yummy mint chocolate gels and 6 Island Nectar Roctane gels to my front door, which brings the cost of the Roctane gels down to the price of the regular gels - a good deal!

Only 16 days until the Denver Rock 'n' Roll Marathon!

  4. So far, so good on the taper. I'm cutting a run or two a week, lowering the mileage, and feeling strong with a bit of speedwork.

Too bad about missing the deal!

  5. I wasn't a fan of the Roctane GU. I tried the pineapple and the vanilla orange. Neither were my favorites. I like the espresso/chocolate ones the best.

  6. Oh, yeah, I used to buy espresso love (chocolate) a lot. It's a risk - buying Island Nectar before tasting it, but the price was good!
