Training for a Trail Race

Days like this - one reason I run.

I've gotten in a few short runs this week since running the Houston marathon last Sunday. Today I did a little bit of trail running - only half a mile during my 8 mile run.

Even though my pace slows down on the trail, the time passes quickly because I'm busy looking out for roots, turns and dips in the trail. The birds were singing and there was a light rain to cool me off on this humid morning.

I'm training for the Orphan Hope Half Marathon Trail Run which takes place in three weeks. It will be my first half marathon on trails and I can't wait!

  1. Very exciting!!! Are you wearing specific trail shoes or just your regular running ones? I'm definitely wanting to try a trail. it just seems like fun to be so focused the whole run.

  2. I'm just wearing my regular running shoes. Hopefully, they'll be good enough. (I often wear ASICS 2150, for example.)

  4. Yeah for trail races.
My husband is joining me this year for the Dupont State Forest 12k. I wanted to run the Half Marathon in the same forest but it's a week after the marathon or half marathon in Roanoke so I had to pick.

I'm hoping to do some of my training on trails, too, even though my spring races will probably mostly be on the road.

  9. I don't run trails often, but really enjoy it when I do. (I need to learn to pick my feet up better so that trail running is not so dangerous for me.)

hope you have fun with your upcoming race

  11. Ooh, you're gonna love it. I did a half a couple of months ago where half of it was on trails and it was fabulous. So much better than roads.

  15. Trail races sound fun. I might start looking at some. The pace definitely slows down, but I bet that the recovery is easier if you can avoid the pitfalls!

  16. Awesome! I've been wanting to try trail running, but never seem to find the time. I will have to look into it when the hip is all healed and I can handle uneven terrain!
