3 New Things: Friends, GU, Ultra

  1. Two runs with new running friends! Yesterday I ran with Amanda (She takes great photos!) and today I ran with Melissa (She's starting the Couch to 5K Plan!). Time flies when you're talking!
  2. I received a surprise gift in the mail today. Thanks, GU! Notice that these Roctane powders are labeled Ultra Endurance. That leads to number three on my list...
  3. I'm thinking about signing up to run my first ultra - the Hogs Hunt 50K. Yesterday I ran 22 miles and today I ran 10.5 miles. I made it through both days without any chafing or blisters, thanks to Body-glide (and petroleum jelly on my feet, too). I felt good during the first part of today's run, but I ran out of energy in the last couple of miles - I need to figure this out! Plus, I'm not usually sore after 20 miles anymore, but after today's run - sore legs!
Interesting post: Should you really eat low fat foods and graze, too? Lately, I've been using whole milk and yogurt. They seem to be more filling so that I can drink/eat less than if I use fat-free.

  1. I needed to read your post today :) My long run today was "eh" and its motivating to read of a successful long run.

I'm excited for your 50K pursuit! I too am flirting with an ultra. I was thinking of one in late May, but I may do better with a Fall race that's really close to home. Can't wait to read about your training & your race!

  4. It seems like low fat dairy is an easy way to keep calories away. Keep us posted.

  6. Great job with back to back long runs like that! I can't even imagine ultra, but maybe after marathon I will be able to think about it a little! Good for you. yay for fun things in the mail too!

  7. Yay for free runner stuff! After so many marathons I think an ultra makes total sense! The leg soreness is probably related to the lack of energy, having some lactic acid built up. Keep us posted on the full fat experiment.

  8. I'm sure you'll do great with the 50K! If you're so used to running 20 miles and more, adding another 8K to the marathon distance will be no problem.
A question for you: I noticed you always mention Body glide and petroleum jelly, do you think they are really necessary? Or is it something that is different for every runner? I have never had a blister yet, was I just lucky?

    1. I don't think that you should change anything if you never chafe or blister. Only recently I started getting blisters on my feet so I started using both Body glide and petroleum jelly on them where they tend to blister. The petroleum jelly may be overkill, but I really, really don't want blisters! Body glide, I've used for a long time - to prevent chafing. Yeah, I think it's different for every runner and it depends on how many miles you go - I only cover my toes with stuff for very long runs. Otherwise, I'm fine. Glad you don't have to worry about blisters!

  9. AWESOME on your 50k plan! Are the trail races whispering your name??? :-) It will be interesting to see how things go with trying out the whole fat dairy. We generally stay low fat with the dairy. I have really been enjoying the greek yogurt - twice the protein of some of the regular yogurts!

  10. Woot to 50K!!! Can't wait to hear more!
Where would we be without Bodyglide?? I need to buy stock in their company. You use vaseline instead of BG on you feet?? Hmm, I'll have to give that a try.

  15. An ultra! I had a suspicion you might try one :)

I like your final question. I read a blog recently that had to do with that topic:
