A Healthy Snack & Your Comments

Today instead of writing about the M&M's I keep on my kitchen counter, I'm writing about healthy snacks, which is fitting since most of my snacks are actually healthy ones. Yesterday I spread some nut butter on a date half and topped it with some coconut. A sprinkle of cinnamon would be good, too. I had never made these before and I liked them.

In the past, I've enjoyed unfilled, whole dates when I run. Today I sandwiched two nut filled dates together, wrapped them in plastic wrap and took them on my run. They became a sticky mess in the plastic so I'll stick to plain dates when I run and save the nut filled ones for home. After my run, I chopped up the messy dates and put them in my banana/oat/peanut butter smoothie.

There were some funny comments on my last post, 7 Random Facts About Moi. I'm glad that I mentioned the candy because now I know that I need to hide the candy jar if any of you visit! I mentioned the time I jumped over a snake and a question was asked:

Do you jump over snakes because you hate them, are startled by them or because it is fun?

Snakes are good because they eat little animals that I do hate, but if I never see another one, that's fine with me. Startled isn't a strong enough word to describe how I feel when I see a snake. Terrified is better. It was fun to jump over the snake, but that's only because it's always nice to survive a surprise snake encounter!

I hope your day is filled with healthy food and not one snake!

  1. Dates are so yummy! I don't eat them often, but they are a treat when I do get them. I'm too lazy to eat anything but gels on my runs--kudos to you for fueling with real food!

    1. I like gels when I race because they're so convenient, but when I'm training and have more time to spare it's nice to change it up a bit.

  2. You just never know in that split second when you are running and you see the snake you are about to step on if it is a good snake or a bad snake and either way you don't want to step on it! I freak and jump too. even for dead ones I have jumped over in the same spot in the road for the last two weeks.

    1. So funny about jumping over the ones that haven't moved in weeks and are dead! There just isn't enough time to do anything else!

  3. I get terrified when I see snakes too!

Those dates look really good! I'm not a fan of dates by themselves, but with those toppings I think I would really enjoy them!

    1. I think there are a lot of people who don't like dates. Another dried fruit I like to use on a run is apricots.

    1. Yeah, me, too. That time, I just expressed it by jumping into the air at just the right time!

  5. Dates are filled with good nutrition. I wish I enjoyed whole dates but I don't like the texture unless it's in chopped up little pieces. Still good, just more work.

  6. What a creative snack! Mine are always more boring, like a handful of almonds. I need to get creative. And I do not like seeing snakes either. The whole genre of creepy, crawly things--no thanks!

  7. I am not a fan of dates :( I have never ran into a snake before and I hope I never do because I would freak out!

  8. I used to eat dates and dried apricots when I ran in winter and they'd freeze solid. Haha! I'd be so very happy if I never saw another snake.

  9. I had a bad experience with dates the first time I tried one - I was probably only 10 or 12 and I pulled one off a tree at my great-grandparents house and bit into it - YUCK!!! I haven't tried them since!!!
I like snakes - the poisonous ones I have respect for but the rest I will always hold!!!

  10. I've never ate a date ( that I know of). I only saw a snake one time on my run and I just jumped over it too!

  11. Living here in Africa snakes have always been a normal part of my life. I often see them on the trails. I really love them but I do respect them a great lot. Also living here where I do I hardly ever see dates.

  12. I would have totally been freaked out by the snake encounter too! Good thing you have enough time to react to jump over it and not step on it.

  13. Hey, that was my question! I am surprised you are terrified by them because you always seem brave when you encounter them. I am impressed.

    1. Yes, it was! Well, I want to be brave. Thanks!

  14. Yum - that snack sounds delicious! I've had stuffed figs before although it was probably not a healthy snack as they were stuffed with cheese and wrapped with bacon ;)

  15. I love dates. I can't buy them very often because I eat them like candy. They're healthy, but not when you eat 40 of them in a day. :) Sometimes I saute them in a little olive oil and sea salt... it sounds weird, but holy cow are they ever amazing.

  16. I was bad today! We had a conference at work and they had a frozen yogurt truck outside for the munch break. I did mix some coconut in my really chocolaty marshmallow mess lol I am terrified of snakes also, I haven't seen in awhile because I haven't been as faithful to my trail as I should be.

    1. I haven't had frozen yogurt for ages. I tried different kinds from the grocery store, but it's not the same consistency that you get from a frozen yogurt place. Your frozen yogurt sounds like a good way to treat yourself for getting in some good running this week!

    1. Yeah, after the initial scare I like to get a picture so I can identify it better later.
