Home Again, Fasted Run, R2R?

Bridge Crossing During 3 Day Back Country Hike (RMNP in CO)

We've been back home since October 1 after taking a four month RV vacation and even though RV'ing is a fun adventure, there are nice things about being home.
  • Seeing friends
  • Good wifi
  • My washing machine and dryer
We don't know when we'll take off again, but it was a fun vacation with national parks, a visit to Canada and three races:

Home Sweet (RV) Home
Don't Touch That Toast!

I'm trying something new that I used to do a lot - fasted running (not eating before my morning run). All I thought about during today's run was food, but that will pass as I get used to this. It would be nice if I didn't have to eat so much during a race, but I may only eat less during training runs and then take in the usual amount of gels during races. Not only that, but I've been eating fewer carbs and more healthy fats like avocados and coconut butter.

North Rim of the Grand Canyon
R2R at Grand Canyon?

I've been talking up doing a rim to rim (R2R) hike and I can hardly believe this, but my husband and his sister didn't laugh in my face as hard as I thought they would when I said that we need to go on this 20 plus mile hike together.

What's next?

This week I turn the big 5-0 and last week my husband (his blog) and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary! It's been a fun year and now I'm looking forward to what's next. In running news, I'm increasing my running miles for a future race (don't have one picked out yet, but I'm up to 5 miles at a time now). I've added in more lunges and squats, too, because I want to be ready for a possible 2016 R2R hike!

Do you have a special goal for an upcoming birthday or have you heard of a birthday goal that inspired you? I like the idea of running the number of miles that match your age.

  1. Beautiful Grand Canyon photo!

Happy happy birthday AND happy anniversary! Both accomplishments and milestones to celebrate!

Fasted runs can be nice - I've found I still want to take in plenty of gel during a race though (marathons). I went Paleo for a couple years, now am back on GF grain, sometimes I think about going back to Paleo. I don't think I was ever truly LCHF though I was more in that direction.

I like the miles-per-year challenge - but I turn 50 next year and I haven't done my first 50 miler yet (did a 50k! last year) still concentrating on marathons and getting faster. I've seen people make a whole party out of that challenge, have friends meet them for part or all of the run, etc. Maybe someday.

Sounds like you're having a great time these days, good to see!

  2. Happy birthday and anniversary! Both big milestone years -- that's wonderful. And I'm in still in awe of your grand adventures in the RV. I look forward to being able to do that with my husband (but it's 10 years in the future until my youngest is in college). No birthday goals here (next year will be 45, hooray for a new age group!) but I do think one of the best ways to celebrate the day is to go for a run or at least be out in nature!

  3. I turned 50 this summer and did the Bridge of the Gods Half Marathon on the weekend before--combining a mini trip and a race for my birthday. I'd like to do the Reykjavik Marathon in 2017 as it falls on my birthday that year. Of course I don't know if I'll still be running marathons by then, but hopefully they have a half marathon too, so that would be an option.

  4. That's an awesome RV! I could probably live in that forever and just send my laundry out. :)
I hope someday to get my family to the grand canyon for an R2R hike. It is awe inspiring!
Well done on your return from the 55k! Happy anniversary and happy birthday early :)

    1. Our RV will be even more awesome when we get it back from the repair shop. One of the slides stopped working, for one thing, which made it even cozier than it was at the beginning of our trip!

  5. Happy birthday and happy anniversary! 30 years is incredible!

My birthday is in January and I live in a snowy climate, so the thought of a miles per year birthday run is pretty daunting. I'll be 30 next year and if the weather is similar to this year, it will be about 10*F. No thanks, I'm good with just a shorter run!

Fasted runs sound kind of awful. I had one training run this summer when I was just STARVING about 13 miles into my 20 mile run. The last 7 miles just sucked. All I could think about was food and how gross my shot bloks were tasting (usually I don't mind them, but I wanted REAL food!).

    1. All that I could think of was food, too, but back in July of 2013 (just looked it up!), I blogged about running 17 miles on empty and although I was a little hungry at first, I got over it. That makes me think there's hope!

  6. Great pictures! I love that you guys traveled around in the RV, that is awesome! You got to visit a lot of amazing places. But I bet it is nice to get home have a little more space and ya the washer and dryer is probably a big plus!
Congrats to you guys, and Happy Birthday to you!

  10. Happy birthday and congratulations on your 30 yrs of marriage. That is something truly special! You going to run a 50K for you bday? I was thinking of you the other day when I signed up for my first 50k. You said you are trying to not to eat before your morning runs. How far would you go during your run?

    1. So far this week, I'm up to 6 miles fasted. My miles are fairly low after running the recent 55k so it's a fairly easy thing to try now. Congrats on signing up for the ultra!

  13. Welcome home, and a (very belated) happy birthday! A camper can really feel like such a home away from home, but it also does feel good to be back home.

Your rim to rim hike sounds exciting! What an adventure that would be. I've been to the Grand Canyon, but I've never been down in it.

    1. Now I've finally gone done on both rims for just a short distance. Much less crowded on the North Rim when we visited.
